Malver tising, also known as Malicious Advertising, is a cyberattack method in which malicious code is embedded into digital advertisements that are distributed through legitimate online advertising networks. These ads can infect users’ devices either through direct interaction—such as clicking on the ad—or passively, via “drive-by downloads” that require no user action beyond visiting a compromised webpage. Malicious advertising exploits vulnerabilities in browsers, plugins, or software, often delivering malware such as ransomware or spyware. Due to the complexity and decentralization of the online ad ecosystem, malicious advertising is difficult to trace and increasingly used by cybercriminals to target large audiences through reputable websites.
