Microsoft’s commitment to AI continues, and its latest move? Making Copilot open automatically in Microsoft Edge.
Currently, if you want to use Copilot in Edge, you have to click the icon in the sidebar — a small step, but one that Microsoft may soon remove. With this proposed update, Copilot would open by default whenever you launch Edge or open a new tab, putting AI assistance front and center from the start.
Some users may welcome the change, appreciating quick access to AI help. Others may find it intrusive. Either way, this test signals that Microsoft envisions Copilot becoming a more integrated part of the Edge experience.
Another new feature in testing: an “Ask Copilot” button in Edge’s Settings menu. This could allow users to quickly ask Copilot for help navigating or adjusting browser settings, instead of digging through menus — a potential time-saver, especially for busy teams.
If your business uses Edge, here’s how you might benefit:
- Quicker issue resolution – Skip the Google searches and IT calls. Ask Copilot directly when something’s not working.
- Always-ready AI help – Whether summarizing articles, drafting emails, or answering questions, Copilot would be instantly accessible.
- Improved protection – Microsoft is also testing “Scareware Blocker,” an AI-driven tool designed to detect and block scam sites in real time.
As with most experimental features, this update is currently being tested in Edge Canary (Microsoft’s developer version), and there’s no guarantee it will roll out to the general public. But given Microsoft’s strong AI push, it wouldn’t be surprising to see these features land in a future update.
Still, automatic Copilot access raises questions — especially around privacy. Microsoft hasn’t revealed full details yet, but if Copilot is always on, some users may feel uneasy. Ideally, there will be clear options to disable or limit its behavior.
If these updates go live, Copilot could become a constant companion in Edge — helping users work more efficiently, solve problems faster, and stay safer online.
