The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), a division of the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S. Department of Education, gathers, examines, and disseminates data on public school district finances in the country. It also compares education statistics across national boundaries and takes the lead in creating and advancing the usage of standardized language and criteria for the gathering of such information. The U.S. Federal Statistical System includes NCES as one of its primary agencies.
